Overland Access Crossing the Stillwater Range via Clan Alpine Wash

The Stillwater Range cuts a dramatic profile across the skyline east of Fallon, offering some of the most rugged low-range driving in northern Nevada. Taking Clan Alpine Wash to the high crest demands patience, proper tire deflation, and a solid understanding of rock placement. This field log outlines the terrain expectations and historical waypoints along this classic backcountry loop.

Preparing Your Rig at Fallon

Before departing our basecamp in town, double check tire pressures and secure all recovery equipment inside the vehicle. The track up Clan Alpine involves sharp shale shelves that test sidewalls, so airing down to sixteen pounds is essential for traction and tire protection. Carry at least two full days of surplus water even on a single-day scout.

The Climb Through Canyon Wash

The lower wash begins smoothly in fine sand, but quickly narrows into a canyon framed by rust terracotta basalt cliffs. Navigating the boulder fields requires steady throttle control and clear spotter signals through the tight turns. Modern trail modifications are minimal here, preserving the raw character of the historic freight route.

Watch for old telegraph wire ground stakes along the upper terrace walls. These weathered wooden posts served as the vital communication lifeline connecting remote camps back to the railheads.

Camping at the Ridge

Reaching the saddle rewards you with panoramic views stretching across Dixie Valley toward the Desatoya Mountains. Set camp on established gravel flats behind the windbreak rock walls left by earlier travelers, and always pack out every scrap of waste.
